On July 5, 2004 while responding to a structure fire east of Government Camp, Engine 254 was struck by a pick-up pulling an RV trailer. The pick up was attempting to avoid a collision with a car that had stopped in the middle of the traffic lane in response to seeing the oncoming engine. Since the car stopped suddenly in the middle of the traffic lane without pulling to the right the driver of the pick-up and trailer was forced to lock up his brakes, sliding into the path of Engine 254.
The engine struck the pick-up essentially head-on and then left the road. Only minor injuries were received by the crew of the engine and the occupants of the pick-up.
Ironically the accident happened on a stretch of Highway 26 known as "Blood Alley", where this engine has responded dozens of times on serious accidents.
The true extent of damage to the engine is unknown at this time, it is valued at $210,000.00.
